Nancy Kotting
Photo by Lisa Spindler | In 1994, following successful careers in finance as a trader of corporate and government bonds and then in alternative newspaper publishing, Ms. Kotting obtained a Masters Degree in Historic Preservation from Eastern Michigan University. She then spent several years both assisting in the building of Alternative Media Inc., an alternative newspaper chain based in Detroit, MI and working in the preservation community at the organizational level in the city. A founding member of The Detroit Heritage and Community Development Forum, she and representatives from local, state and regional preservation organizations worked in cooperation with the National Trust for Historic Preservation Detroit toward building a more unified and effective preservation movement in the city of Detroit. In addition, Nancy's preservation efforts during this period included the restoration of several historic residential properties in both Michigan and Florida.
The grand daughter of one of Detroit's prominent architects during its architectural gilded age, Nancy's love of the built environment developed over years spent in barns while working in the equine arts and living for over a decade amongst the architectural treasures in the city of Detroit proper. As student at the age of twelve, Nancy attended Upland Hills Farm School and Environmental Awareness Center in Oxford, Michigan. It was here that Nancy was imprinted with a lifelong commitment to living and working toward environmental justice and sustainability.
In 1999, Nancy relocated to the breathtaking landscapes of Northwest Michigan's Leelanau Peninsula. Once settled in Leelanau, Nancy shifted her focus from urban preservation issues to rural preservation. Nancy recognized almost immediately the critical role of the peninsula's barns in forming the core identity of the county along with its orchards, vineyards and endlessly beautiful coastline.
In 2003, Nancy had the privilege of meeting David Ciolek, one of the nations most talented barnrights. With David's help, Nancy expanded her academic and practical knowledge of barns. She will always be indebted to Mr. Ciolek for sharing his experience and wisdom with such generosity.
In 2005 Nancy launched N.L. Kotting & Company, LLC as a logical evolution in her lifelong interest in the built environment. Her goal was to create a company that would serve as a vehicle for preserving one of America's greatest icons: the American Barn. To do so, Nancy knew that each barn would only be preserved if it could be returned to economic viability, either as an agricultural building or adaptively reused for other purposes. Doing so in an environmentally and culturally respectful way was paramount in her business
plan.
An international level competitor in Dressage, Nancy has spent over 39 years in the equine industry as well and brings a lifetime of experience in this area to stable design and the adaptive reuse of traditional post & beam barns as modern stables.
