Whats New Wednesday June 1, 2008 Woodland writing/entertainment barn completed and approved... N.L. Kotting & Co., LLC has completed and received Leelanau Construction Code Authority Final Approval on a woodland writing/entertainment barn deep in a cathedral-like setting of old growth trees north of the village of Leland in Leelanau County, Michigan. The relocated post & beam structure stands 30' ft tall, 18' wide and 24' long. The structure was rescued from inevitable demolition-by-neglect from the location where it originally stood in Williamston, Michigan in April of 2007. After much analysis, it has been determined that this structure was originally built by members of the local community to in all probability serve as a rustic chapel. It is our hope that it will continue to serve as 'sacred' space in its new home in Leelanau. Nancy Kotting would like to thank the following individuals for their generosity in saving this structure: Architect Bruce Smith and his wise and beautiful wife and partner of 60 years Doris Smith; Leelanau based carpenter and newlywed Mark Kellogg; Nate & Andy; the staff of the Leelanau Construction Code Authority; and finally, David Ciolek without whose love, vision and talent in the realm of barns ....this barn would have never been saved. Wednesday June 1, 2008 45 North Winery Tasting Room Barn Conversion under way... N.L. Kotting & Co., LLC, Smith + Smith Architects and David Ciolek Construction continue with Leelanau County's first full barn relocation and conversion as a commercial tasting room. The barn being used in this project has been rescued by the owners of 45 North from encroaching development which surrounded it in the Grand Rapids area of southwest Michigan. The barn measures 34' by 46' with a two story back el which will house a future warming kitchen and office. The full walk out basement will be utilized as retail wine storage. The main level holds the tasting bar, restrooms and retail display areas. Moving up to the mezzanine/loft area, visitors will find themselves enjoying a birds eye view of both the barn itself and the long views of the vineyards of 45 North stretching out in three directions including a view of the 45th parallel itself which bisects the vineyard.
